2009: Selected by Sounders FC in the 2008 Expansion Draft.
2008: Played in 14 games, starting 11 … Scored one goal and three assists.
2007: Appeared in 24 games while making 20 starts and tying a career-high with five assists. Vagenas had his first career multi-assist game, setting up two goals in LA’s 3-1 win over Colorado on 9/8. His five assists placed him in a tie for second place on the team for the season. Vagenas also collected one assist in two Open Cup games, setting up Santino Quaranta’s 120th minute goal in the 3-1 win. Vagenas also appeared in all five of the Galaxy’s SuperLiga games, making two starts.
2006: Played in 25 games, making 24 starts, Vagenas continued to show his strengths in the midfield while contributing two goals on the year.
2005: Enjoyed the finest season of his professional career. Serving as the team’s captain from the outset, he appeared in 29 regular season games – 28 of them in the starting XI and played a career-high 2,478 minutes. In addition, he scored a career-high five goals and added four assists in the regular season. Perhaps his most important goal of the year was his game-winning tally in the 24th minute of the inaugural match of the Honda SuperClásico against Chivas USA on 4/23. That goal was his first in the regular season since 9/8/2001.
2004: Appeared in a career-low of just 12 games for the Galaxy. Was plagued by an adductor injury that forced him to sit out 17 straight matches in the early and middle portions of the season. Assisted on Arturo Torres' late game-winning goal against San Jose on 9/11, giving him his first assist since the 2002 season. Played the full 90 minutes in each of the Galaxy's final six games of the year.
2003: Appeared in 20 games on the season and played every minute of every regular season game after the All-Star break.
2002: Registered three assists on the year including one on 7/13 at Colorado, when he assisted on Ezra Hendrickson's game-winning goal. He appeared in a total of 17 games, making 16 starts. In one of those starts, on 6/8 in Chicago, Vagenas was sent off, for the first and only time in his MLS career, for a second bookable offense in a 1-0 win over the Fire.
2001: In his second-year with the club, the midfielder led the club in appearances with 26 and tallied three goals to go along with three assists.
2000: Made his MLS debut on 5/24 in New England, replacing Danny Pena in the 77th minute. He would go on to score on his debut, providing the Galaxy's only goal in stoppage time of a 2-1 loss. Would finish the year having played in 16 games, making 12 starts, scoring three goals and adding an assist. Scored in back-to-back games on 7/8 in Miami and 7/15 against D.C. United, which remains the only time in his MLS career that Vagenas has scored in consecutive contests.
National Team
One of three then-Galaxy members on the U.S. Olympic team (Danny Califf and Sasha Victorine were the others), he helped lead the squad to a fourth place finish in Sydney, Australia, the best U.S. finish ever. Playing alongside current Galaxy teammate Landon Donovan, Vagenas led the team in scoring at the Olympics, scoring three times, including the only goal in the 3-1 loss to Spain in the semifinals. He has made two career appearances with the U.S. National Team, coming off the bench for the final four minutes of a 2-0 win over Mexico on 10/25/00 in Los Angeles and playing the final 23 minutes of a 4-0 win over Canada on 1/8/03.
College Highlights
Vagenas played four years of college soccer at UCLA, with the first three coming with Sigi Schmid as his coach. He had 15 goals and 30 assists in 82 career games for the Bruins and helped lead them to the 1997 NCAA Championship. During his four years at UCLA, the Bruins compiled a record of 74-13 with Vagenas missing just two games.
Personal
Born and raised in Pasadena, Vagenas is married to his wife Mindy. His parents are Alex and Tashiz Vagenas and he has three siblings, George (33), Theoni (27) and Dino (25).
