George Bonaci
(Nominated by Victoria Carlson)
How long have you been a Sounders FC season ticket holder?
2 years and have loved every moment
Tell us about your involvement in the soccer community
Growing up in Australia, George has always been a soccer fan. In grade school he traveled with his mother to South Africa and learned how much other children love soccer, but don't have any gear. He started his first soccer drive in grade school and every other year heads a drive in order to donate soccer gear to people in need. To date he has donated over 10,000 soccer balls, 5,000 jerseys and 2,500 pairs of cleats and shin guards. Despite his busy schedule of playing club soccer, he has coached youth soccer for the past ten years.
Tell us about your involvement within the community
George has always been involved in the community and increases his involvement every year. For the past five summers he has traveled to Egypt in order to provide free medical and dental services to the rural communities. He fundraises his own trips and last year raised enough money to bring 15 other volunteers with him. He brought that success back to Seattle by established a center for cultural diversity that exposes youth to different cultures in other countries. He is trying to open the minds of the young, so that they are global citizens in the future.
Why should you receive the Golden Scarf?
Due to George's relentless commitment to the community and love for the Sounders, he deserves it!
Steve Brannon
(Nominated by Kevin Brannon)
How long have you been a Sounders FC season ticket holder?
Inaugural Season Ticket Holder
Tell us about your involvement in the soccer community
I started playing soccer as a child, and during my first season there were not enough referees for the games, and the league was discussing breaking up. Steve volunteered to referee, so that the league could continue to exist and I would be able to play soccer. Over the years, Steve acted as his referee chapter’s treasurer and as a mentor to younger officials. In the 25 years since he started with soccer, he still has the same passion and drive for the game and is as excited to watch the Sounders and he is to watch bumblebee soccer.
Tell us about your involvement within the community
As a small business owner, Steve has an incredible connection to the community that he works and plays in. Every year he gives more than 10 percent of the proceeds of his business to charity. Some of these charities included the King County Boys and Girls Club, Children’s Home Society, Seattle Children’s Hospital Foundation, and the Salvation Army. Steve has begun running marathons for charity and also volunteers once a week with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training Program as a mentor, as his wife has been diagnosed with leukemia.
Why should you receive the Golden Scarf?
In 25 years of supporting soccer, he embodied its finest qualities: passion, joy, and selflessness.
