FOXBORO, Mass. - For the sixth time this season, the Sounders FC went down a goal and battled back for the victory.
This time, it was at Gillette Stadium - where Seattle hadn't won in their three MLS seasons - in a 2-1 win over the New England Revolution.
Fredy Montero scored two goals and Kasey Keller had seven saves as the Sounders improved to 16-6-9 (57 points) on the season.
"The team has a lot of character and sometimes it seems that after the opponent scores we wake up and play a little bit better. In the first half we were a little bit sluggish and we were lucky that we made them pay for their mistake," Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid said.
Seattle got off to a slow start and dodged a bullet in just the fourth minute of the match when Milton Caraglio headed in a ball from Ryan Guy, but Caraglio was flagged offside on the play and the match remained scoreless.
Keller was saved by the linesman's flag on that play, but he made sure that nothing came easy for New England after that. Later in the half, he swatted away a Benny Feilhaber free kick that was bound for the corner of the net and smothered a shot by Guy to keep the Revs off the board.
New England finally took the lead in the 35th minute, though not for long.
Feilhaber found Diego Fagundez for a header off a corner kick, giving the 16-year-old Home Grown forward a goal in his first MLS start.
Montero made sure the lead didn't last though, scoring just 66 seconds later.
Nate Jaqua headed down a ball forward by Pat Ianni and it skipped right over the foot of Ryan Cochrane. Montero charged on the loose ball and blasted a first-time left-footed shot past Matt Reis for the first-half equalizer.
"It was good timing because we had energy and we had to keep focused and keep fighting for the team," Montero said. "It was really good for the team and it was really good for me to score again."
Seattle then added another to start the second half and complete the come-from-behind victory.
David Estrada - starting for the first time this season - blasted a shot from the right side that was deflected into the air by a defender. Jaqua chested the ball down and Montero poked the ball home for his second goal of the night to give the Sounders a 2-1 lead in the 47th minute.
Montero now has a goal or assist in each of Seattle's last six MLS matches, giving him five goals and three assists in that stretch and 11 goals on the season.
"He's in good form right now and when a goal-scorers hot, you continue to bet on him and ride him," Schmid said. "That was why we started Fredy tonight and we were looking to get somewhere between 45 and 60 minutes out of him and he rewarded us with two goals tonight."
The win pushes the Sounders road unbeaten streak to seven matches in all competitions as they return home for the final in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup on Tuesday at CenturyLink Field. Seattle will meet the Chicago Fire with an eye on their third straight Open Cup title. Kickoff is set for 7 pm and tickets are still available on SoundersFC.com.
