Fucito Blasts Sounders To Victory

By MATT GASCHK
Sounders FC Insider

SEATTLE - Call him Kasey the Prophet.

After the Sounders FC allowed a stoppage time goal last week on the road against Real Salt Lake to turn a 2-1 Seattle victory into a 2-2 draw, goalkeeper Kasey Keller predicted that Seattle would find themselves on the positive side of a stoppage time goal changing the result of a game. He didn’t know that it would be the very next game when Mike Fucito scored in the 92nd minute to give the Sounders a 1-0 victory over the Kansas City Wizards in front of 35,924 at Qwest Field Saturday afternoon.

“I’m so happy. The guys fought so hard the whole 90 minutes and it would have been a shame to come away with a nil-nil or a 1-1,” Keller said. “I’m just very proud that we were able to hold off and get the good win.”

Fucito’s game-winning smash was his first MLS goal after spending most of his time with the team in 2009 on the injured list, rewarding not only Fucito for the late-game heroics, but also head coach Sigi Schmid, who subbed on Fucito and Brad Evans, who assisted the goal, in the second half.

“That’s the best feeling in the world, scoring a goal,” Fucito said. “I’m glad that it was at such an opportune time.”

The Sounders and Wizards played a tight battle through 90 minutes, though Kansas City held the statistical advantage through most of the match. Neither team had any particularly threatening goal-scoring chances until stoppage time.

After the clock locked in on 90:00, Evans took a throw-in 25 yards out on the right sideline, finding Fucito racing into an open area on the right side of the box. He looked far post, drawing Wizards goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen one step to his right, then blasted it past his left hand and into the net for a 1-0 lead.

“I remember from film that on throw-ins Sigi always wants someone to stretch. I saw Brad had the ball and I ran through trying to stretch them,” Fucito said. “He made a great throw right in my path and I was one-on-one with the goalie. I hit it and I finished it well. … It was unbelievable.”

The excitement was nearly short-lived, though, as the Wizards raced up the other way on the ensuing kickoff and forced Keller into a dramatic save to hold the lead. Chance Myers carried the ball up the right side of the box and took a low-angle shot that Keller parried away for a corner kick.

“We almost fell asleep there for a second,” said Schmid, was trying to sub Patrick Ianni into the game after the goal, but couldn’t get him on the field. “I think Mike was in a state of euphoria still and didn’t get back on the left side on defense. I think he’ll be in that state for the next 72 hours.”

Despite the enthusiasm of the dramatic home victory, Schmid knows the Sounders are far from where they want to be.

“I’m happy with the win. I’ll always take a win. It felt good to win on a late goal,” Schmid said. “We played better than we did in Salt Lake, but still not up to standards we set for ourselves.”

The win moves the Sounders FC to 2-1-1 (7 points) and drops the Wizards to 2-1-0 (6 points). Seattle will now take to the road for two games in four days, facing FC Dallas at Pizza Hut Park Thursday night and Toronto FC on Sunday afternoon at BMO Field.

88 A real urgency from the Sounders as they push the ball froward. Brad Evans is tossed aside by Pablo Escobar as a ball is played to him with no call. Moments later Davy Arnaud fights to shield off Osvaldo Alonso as a ball goes down the right side bound for the endline and is whistled for the foul.
85Mike Fucito subs on for Steve Zakuani.
82While Brad Evans is tended to on the field Teal Bunbury subs on for Josh Wolff.
80 Brad Evans is laying on the turf after a collision in the box with three Seattle players signalling for KC to play the ball out, but they play right past the defense and away. Normally the sportsmanlike thing to do is to play the ball out and take the ball back after the player is removed ... just saying.
73 Freddie Ljungberg sends a beautiful free kick to Tyrone Marshall at the far post, but he can't get enough of it and his header goes through to the other side.
72Stephane Auvrey tosses the ball into the air after a foul is called on him, clearly working for a delay and earns a yellow card in the process.
71 Brad Evans looks to make an instant impact as Freddie Ljungberg steps out to take a pass in the box, drawing Jimmy Nielsen away before he drops an easy ball for Evans who knocks it into the open net. However, Ljungberg was called offside.
70Brad Evans subs on for Pat Noonan, with both getting a good ovation from the crowd.
69 Roger Espinoza crosses a pass into the box from the left side, but Kasey Keller steps out and grabs the ball to keep the threat away.
Attendance 35,924 is the announced attendance.
63 There is a gasp in the press box as Kasey Keller leaves the box to head clear a bouncing ball - very reminiscent of the play that earned him a red-card ejection the last time Seattle hosted the Wizards.
62 Pat Noonan blasts a long hopeful ball to Fredy Montero, but it goes too far forward and Jimmy Nielsen beats him to it.
60 James Riley throws to Pat Noonan going up the right side, but he is knocked away as he swings at the ball and it goes away for a goal kick. Tyrone Marshall comes back on the field after Jimmy Nielsen blasts the goal kick wide for a throw-in.
58 Pablo Escobar blasts a free kick from 24 yards out right into the Seattle wall and it's knocked away for a KC throw in.
57 VERY late whistle by the referee gives KC a free kick for an apparent foul on Pete Vagenas after Ryan Smith was rid of the ball. On the play, Tyrone Marshall's wound is re-opened and he leaves the field.
54 Long-range shot from Davy Arnaud misses high for a goal kick. It looked hopeful, but that's the same type of shot that he scored on last year in Seattle.
52 Fredy Montero gets control of the ball and is pulled to the ground by the jersey by Michael Harrington for a foul 27 yards out. Freddie Ljungberg was taking free kicks from this spot in training and his shot just misses the left post and goes wide for a goal kick.
51 Tough bounce on the Qwest Field turf keeps teh ball away from the head of Freddie Ljungberg and he plays the ball away for a goal kick.
50 Great ball forward for Davy Arnaud attacking the box, but Kasey Keller gets a hand on it to knock it away for a corner kick. Keller again makes a good grab when the Wizards loft a ball into the box off the corner kick.
49 Steve Zakuani goes up the left and his left-footed shot goes just past the far post for a goal kick.
47 Steve Zakuani gets up the left side of the box and crosses for Pat Noonan at the far post, but the cross goes over the top for a goal kick.
47 Fredy Montero takes a pass and knocks it forward with a header. Pablo Escobar knocks him down and Montero appeals for a call to no avail.
46 Seattle takes the second half kickoff, attacking the south goal. They gained possession so quickly in the first half that I thought they took the kickoff.

43 Tyrone Marshall makes a sliding stop on the right side and knocks the ball away for a corner kick.
42 James Riley and Kei Kamara return to the field. Riley is wearing a number-less jersey.
38 Another great play by Jhon Kennedy Hurtado knocks the ball away from Ryan Smith coming on the attack, giving KC a corner kick. On the corner, James Riley and Kei Kamara collide in the box and both are left in the box on the ground holding their heads.
37Horrible move by the referee. He steps into the face of Steve Zakuani and Zakuani pushes him away and is given a yellow card. Zakuani can't touch the official, but Jair Marrufo absolutely has to be better about instigating players and initiating contact.
36 Ryan Smith swings a left-footed corner into the box, but Kasey Keller springs out to make the grab.
NOTEJimmy Conrad was removed from teh game with a strained left calf.
34 Ryan Smith takes another Wizards corner from the left side, finding Kei Kamara for a header at the far post, but he knocks it up into the air and away for a goal kick.
32Jimmy Conrad is subbed off for Matt Besler.
31 Jimmy Conrad goes down with an apparent injury to his left leg. He is taken off the field with the assistance of a Wizards staffer.
30 Questionable offside call as Freddie Ljungberg cuts a great ball to Steve Zakuani up the left side. He looked clean to me, but the assistant on the far side raised his flag to call offside.
29James Rilet gets to Kei Kamara from behind to earn a yellow card. Looked clean on the ball, but I think Riley may have gotten him with his back leg.
26 Great defense by Jhon Kennedy Hurtado to dispossess Ryan Smith on the right side.
25 Freddie Ljungberg heads the ball forward for Fredy Montero in the box, but Jimmy Nielsen beats him to it and makes the grab.

21 Steve Zakuani and Pat Noonan work a give-and-go up the left side, but Noonan's pass has too much pace for Zakuani and it goes over for a KC throw-in.
18 Tyrone Marshall returns to the field to a rousing applause as Seattle takes a throw-in on the left side.
16 Tyrone Marshall leaves the field with a towel pressed to his forehead. He is making his 250th career MLS start.
14 Pat Noonan finds Fredy Montero for a left-footed shot from 10 yards out, but Jimmy Nielsen defends it away for a corner kick. Freddie Ljungberg takes the initial attempt and it's defended away for a second corner kick on the left side. The second attempt goes through the box and KC takes possession, though a collision in the box between Tyrone Marshall and Stephane Auvrey leaves Marshall on the field with blood coming out of his head.
13 Kei Kamara cuts a ball past Leo Gonzalez up the right side and Osvaldo Alonso slides in to break up his cross.
12 Josh Wolff heads a ball down in the box, but Osvaldo Alonso clears the ball away.
10 Great flick by Fredy Montero finds Steve Zakuani up the left side. His ball goes across the box and Montero recovers it, flicking it again to James Riley up the right side of the box. Riley slides a ball across the front of the goal to Pat Noonan at the far post for a one-touch shot, but he misses outside the post.
06 Steve Zakuani splits two defenders with a right-footed shot from the left corner of the box, but Jimmy Nielsen dives to his right to make the stop.
