Alliance now accepting nominations for Alliance Council

There are currently 20 members on the Sounders FC Alliance Council.

That number will undoubtedly grow in the coming weeks, as voting opened Wednesday to elect new members to the group that acts as a liaison between the Sounders FC Alliance members and the ownership group.

“It’s the most direct way that a motivated fan has of providing direct input into the club,” said Alliance Council president Paul Cox.

This year’s Council will have a much broader spectrum, as this is the first year that the Alliance has been able to implement new voting rules that allow one vote per designated seat, whereas in previous seasons votes were limited to one per season ticket account holder.

Each Alliance member needs 25 votes to earn a seat on the Council. Once on the Council, members can attend monthly meetings where they discuss the issues that are important to the fans.

“It will broaden the base of the Alliance Council and allow for more voices to be heard,” Cox said. “The more people who are on the Council, the more people who can give a thumbs up or thumbs down on issues.”

A select number of Council members will also be chosen by ownership to serve on the Sounders FC Advisory Board – a board made up of ownership, technical staff, corporate partners, and members of the soccer community. Advisory board meetings will take place on a quarterly basis with the annual meeting serving as the 4th quarter Advisory Board meeting.

Voting has another added wrinkle this year, as it is also the first year that the Alliance will have an opportunity to vote on the fate of General Manager Adrian Hanauer, who has overseen a club that has become the first team in over 40 years to win three straight US Open Cup titles and the first MLS expansion team to reach the playoffs in their first three seasons.

However, the Council’s voting opportunities will extend well beyond those topics.

“The Council feels any issues for the entire fanbase can be put on the fall ballot,” Cox said. “We have been able to give feedback – it’s an opportunity for the entire Alliance to have their voice heard.”
