Sounders FC Servando Carrasco named MLS W.O.R.K.S. Humanitarian of the Month

The award recognizes Carrasco's efforts to raise breast cancer awareness, among several other charitable efforts.

RENTON, Wash. - Major League Soccer and the Seattle Sounders FC announced today Servando Carrasco was selected as the MLS W.O.R.K.S. "Humanitarian of the Month" for October. The award recognizes Carrasco's efforts to raise breast cancer awareness, among several other charitable efforts.

Carrasco participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure this summer. He was an honorary captain of the Por La Mujer Hispana team, and was also the starter of the event alongside his mother, Gloria Carrasco, who is a breast cancer survivor. Carrasco's team of 82 members - the largest non-profit team - raised $6,300, and the total raised in the 2012 event in Seattle surpassed $1.1 million.

Because of their efforts, Carrasco was named Humanitarian of the Month for October as Major League Soccer kicks off Breast Cancer Awareness month.

The 24-year-old midfielder out of the University of California-Berkeley was selected in the second round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft by Sounders FC. In his two seasons with the club, Carrasco has been involved in the club's Hispanic outreach and has also appeared at several of the club's summer youth camps. Carrasco has also supported the Puget Sound Blood Center as well as the United We Serve programs.

Carrasco is the fifth different Sounders player to earn Humanitarian of the Month honors, the most of any team in MLS. He joins James Riley, Sanna Nyassi, Fredy Montero and Roger Levesque and he credits Sounders FC director of community outreach Sandy Gregory for helping the team have the opportunity to contribute to the Seattle community.

MLS W.O.R.K.S. is Major League Soccer's community outreach initiative dedicated to addressing important social issues affecting young people and serves as a platform for both League and club philanthropic programs. MLS W.O.R.K.S. seeks to establish Major League Soccer as a leader for improving the lives of people through sport.
