The San Jose Earthquakes defeated the Seattle Sounders 3-2 on Saturday night at PayPal Park in San Jose, Calif. VĂtor Costa, Cristian Espinoza and Jeremy Ebobisse scored for the hosts, while RaĂºl RuidĂaz and Danny Musovski tallied for the Sounders.

The Sounders had the first good look of the match in the eighth minute when Yeimar had a header off a corner kick go just wide of the far post.

San Jose found the breakthrough in the 42nd minute when Jackson Yueill’s cross was flicked on and then redirected on a first-timed finish at the back post by Vítor Costa.

The ‘Quakes doubled their lead about 90 seconds later when Preston Judd got in behind the Sounders’ defense. His shot was parried away by Stefan Frei, but Espinoza cleaned up the rebound.

Espinoza’s goal was initially ruled offside but was overturned and awarded following Video Review.

The Sounders nearly cut the deficit in half in the 57th minute when Danny Leyva picked out Jordan Morris on a ball over the top. Morris brought down the pass off his chest, but his shot was saved by William Yarbrough.

Seattle found a lifeline in the 70th minute when Yeimar was fouled in the box by Paul Marie. RuidĂaz stepped up in the 72nd minute and converted the spot kick for the second time in as many matches.

The Sounders equalized in the 81st minute when Cody Baker whipped in a beautiful cross to the far post that Musovski headed into the back of the net. The assist was the first point of Baker’s MLS career.

The tie game was short-lived, though, as Ebobisse slid to redirect a cross past Frei less than a minute later.
