For the second time this season, Sounders FC will host FC Dallas at CenturyLink Field on Saturday night in a contest between two clubs fighting for playoff contention. On the field, there will be plenty of battles with two teams that play very open styles.
Here are three key matchups to watch.
Osvaldo Alonso vs. David Ferreira
It’s the 2012 MLS Best XI defensive midfielder against the 2010 MLS MVP attacking midfielder as Alonso and Ferreira collide. Ferreira has 22 goals and 36 assists in 102 career matches since coming to MLS in 2009, including one goal and six assists this season. However, he has managed just one goal and no assists in six matches against Sounders FC.
Eddie Johnson vs. George John
It’s a former Dallas player against a Seattlite and former UW Husky as Johnson and John square off. Johnson has shown a propensity toward headed goals and John is among the better aerial defenders in MLS. With Seattle, Johnson has two goals and one assist in three matches against Dallas. However, the only time John played for Dallas in those three matches was the only time the Sounders striker didn’t have a goal or an assist. Johnson had two goals against Dallas in the previous meeting this season.
Sounders defense vs. Dallas set pieces
FC Dallas has its share of aerial threats on the offensive side and get quality service from Michel. Eleven of the team's 27 goals this season have come from corner kicks and free kicks, with nine goals coming via the header, so it is important for Sounders FC to limit those opportunities. Defensively, six of Seattle’s 22 goals allowed have come on set plays. However both of the goals they allowed against Dallas in May came via the set piece – Michel scoring directly from a corner kick and assisting on a Kenny Cooper goal off a free kick.
