Site: Olympic Stadium
Records: Sounders FC 2-1-0 (6 points); Impact 0-3-0 (0 points)
Man of the Match: Obafemi Martins held up the ball all afternoon, occupying the Montreal defenders and even drawing several fouls and a yellow card on Impact center back Hassoun Camara. As an added bonus, Martins had one header miraculously saved by Montreal goalkeeper Troy Perkins only to put away a second-half goal for his first tally of the season.
Telling Stat: 51. As in Sounders FC is unbeaten in 51 straight matches when scoring first, running its record to 40-0-11 with the win on Sunday.
What You Missed: Sounders FC had an extra day in Montreal after snow on the roof of Olympic Stadium delayed the match 24 hours. With two straight days of training in Montreal, the coaches told the team it was like the movie Groundhog Day and they had fun with the extra day of training. After the roof was cleared on Saturday, the game went off without a hitch on Sunday.
So What: Getting a road win while playing without Clint Dempsey and Brad Evans will be big for Seattle’s confidence. As will looking at the standings and seeing themselves in second place in the Western Conference after three matches. It’s still very early in the season, but every point counts and to get six points from the first three matches while Stefan Frei posted two shutouts, Seattle has a lot to be happy about. Now, with Dempsey still unavailable next week, Sounders FC will look to carry that momentum against the Columbus Crew on Saturday at CenturyLink Field.
That’s What He Said: “Me and Oba are kind of picking up right where we left off, finding each other. We always want to be dangerous and if we can connect, that’s a good thing.” Lamar Neagle on his combination play with Martins. Last year they both had eight goals and four assists on the season and this season they have been a dangerous tandem going forward already through three matches.
