Head-To-Head: This is the first of three matches this season between Seattle and
Portland. Sounders FC will host the Timbers on July 13 at CenturyLink Field and the last match will be on August 24 at Providence Park.
All-Time Series: In MLS regular season play, Sounders FC holds a 3-2-3 edge over Portland. However, including playoff matches, Portland takes the lead at 4-3-3. Overall, since 1975 when the Timbers joined the North American Soccer League, Seattle leads at 42-31-11.
Injury Report: Sounders FC – OUT: D Damion Lowe (Hip Injury). QUESTIONABLE: M Brad Evans (L Calf Contusion); M Andy Rose (L Hamstring Injury). Timbers – OUT: M Steven Evans (Back Surgery); GK Donovan Ricketts (Knee), M Rodney Wallace (L ACL Surgery). QUESTIONABLE: M Kalif Alhassan (Groin Strain); M Darlington Nagbe (Leg Contusion); M Steve Zakuani (Hamstring Soreness).
Key Player: Diego Valeri is always a focal point for opposing defenses, but that will become even more prevalent if Nagbe is unable to play. The Argentine playmaker led the Timbers with 10 goals and 13 assists last season, but has yet to register a point this season. He will be hungry to get on the board, particularly against Seattle, so Osvaldo Alonso will need to be on top of his game to keep him at bay.
Notes: Sounders FC defender Djimi Traore and Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts are both suspended for the match after earlier red cards. Traore picked up a red card last week against the Columbus Crew, while Ricketts will be serving the second game of a two-match suspension for a tackle against the Colorado Rapids two weeks ago...Timbers defender Michael Harrington was ejected from Portland’s 2-1 loss to FC Dallas last week, but had the red card rescinded by an independent review panel after appeal. He will be eligible to play on Saturday against Seattle...The American Red Cross and Timbers Army will collect donations at Providence Park on Saturday to help support disaster relief efforts for those affected by the mudslide in Snohomish County. Volunteers will be located at every entrance at Providence Park to collect donations...While there have been five players to play for both the Sounders and the Timbers in MLS – Kenny Cooper, Andrew Weber, Steve Zakuani, Adam Moffatt and Mike Fucito – nobody has played on both sides of the head-to-head matchups to this point. Cooper, Weber and Zakuani have a chance to become the first.
