After Saturday’s massive win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Sounders FC goalkeeper Stefan Frei had some nice things to say about Gonzalo Pineda’s second-half goal.
“It's a FIFA goal,” he said. “The trick button and the curler into the upper 90 with the left foot.”
Sure enough, Pineda’s strike has been recognized by Major League Soccer as a nominee for the AT&T Goal of the Week. It was the Mexican midfielder’s first non-penalty kick goal as a Sounder, and it helped the club secure the 2015 Cascadia Cup and earn three crucial points in Vancouver. The Sounders were recognized for shutting out the Supporters’ Shield leaders in their own house, as centerback Chad Marshall was named to the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week. It’s the third Team of the Week honor this year for Marshall.
Frei and Obafemi Martins were named to the bench for the Team of the Week. Martins scored his sixth goal in as many matches on Saturday, while Frei made eight saves in the game to post his 10th clean sheet of the season. Frei now has 100 saves in 2015, the second-best mark in the league.
