Sounders FC Academy product Jordan Morris and the U.S. Under-23 national team inched closer to a berth the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro next summer with a 2-0 win over Canada in CONCACAF Olympic qualifying on Tuesday at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.
The win gave the U.S. a third-place finish in CONCACAF and kept their chances of reaching Rio alive for at least one more game. They’ll take on Colombia in the all-important CONCACAF-CONMEBOL playoff game in March in Rio.
San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Marc Pelosi scored in the 69th minute and VfB Stuttgart forward Jerome Kiesewetter added a goal from the penalty spot in the 84th for the Americans, who capitalized on a man-advantage for the entire second half. Canadian defender and former Sounders 2 player Giuliano Frano received a double yellow card in the final minutes of the first half that put the Canadians down a man for the remainder of the game.
Morris started and played the entire game in the win. He finished with three goals in five games during the tournament.
