MLS Commissioner Don Garber among U.S. delegates in Switzerland for FIFA presidential election

The soccer world's eyes will turn to Zurich on Friday and MLS will have one of its own among those gathering in Switzerland.

Delegates from the world's soccer federations will meet at FIFA headquarters to vote for the new FIFA president. Major League Commissioner Don Garber will be joining the U.S. Soccer delegates to cast a ballot alongside other representatives, including U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati.

“I’ll be a delegate this year, for the first time in many years,” Garber told reporters in New York City on Monday at an event announcing the league’s new partnership with TAG Heuer. “I feel very strongly that this is a moment of truth for our sport. And I hope and really, truly hope the leaders of our sport can come together and pick the president that can represent a new FIFA for all of us. Not somebody that will just be a new name but represent some of the old ways of doing business."

There are currently five candidates in the running to replace suspended FIFA president Sepp Blatter: Prince Ali, Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, Gianni Infantino, Tokyo Sexwale and Jerome Champagne.

“We’ve got a diverse group from US Soccer coming," said Garber. "Somebody representing amateurs, somebody representing the adult group, myself representing professionals, and we’ll spend some time with Sunil and very carefully deliberate on who we want to support.”

Gulati has already indicated that U.S. Soccer will cast its vote for Prince Ali on Friday.
