Herculez Gomez will continue his training stint with the Seattle Sounders this week as the two sides continue to weigh the possibility of the former U.S. international and World Cup veteran joining the team.
Gomez – the 33-year old forward who began training with the Sounders last week amid the team’s frustrating start to the MLS season – last played for Toronto FC in 2015, scoring one goal in seven appearances with the Reds. He was let go by the club earlier this month.
Gomez took to his personal Twitter account on Saturday to say he was leaving Seattle and headed back to Toronto, but Sounders officials confirmed Monday that he will return to the Emerald City, with Gomez later adding that he'd be back at Starfire Sports on Wednesday.
Gomez scored both goals in S2’s 2-1 preseason win over Gonzaga University on Saturday afternoon and later attended the March to the Match ceremonies before the Sounders’ 2-1 loss to Vancouver Whitecaps FC. He also attended that match at CenturyLink Field and was in the Sounders locker room following the match.
His brief stay with the Reds in 2015 marked his first year back in Major League Soccer since he carved out a comfortable career in Mexico, playing with six different teams from 2010-15 and leveraging his success there into a spot on the U.S. World Cup team in 2010.
Gomez has scored six goals in 24 career caps with the USMNT, but hasn’t featured for Jurgen Klinsmann’s squad since March 2013. He appeared in eight World Cup qualifying games in the buildup to Brazil, but failed the make Klinsmann’s final roster.
