This Day In Seattle Sounders History: Fredy Montero dials long distance against LA Galaxy

Editor’s Note: SoundersFC.com is taking a look back through the history books to dig up some of the biggest and best moments in franchise history, both on and off the field. In the latest edition, we look back Fredy Montero's epic goal against the LA Galaxy on May 2, 2012.

Everybody loves a long bomb.

The precision, the power, the audacity to even try it, they're all essential components of a great long distance goal, and when executed to perfection, it’s one of the most exciting feats in all of sports.

On May 2, 2012, forward Fredy Montero performed such a goal in front of a sold out crowd at CenturyLink Field. After receiving the ball at midfield from teammate Osvaldo Alonso, Montero turned and began trotting up the field, expecting LA Galaxy defenders to step to him. As the defense continued to show him space, however, Montero decided to forego his passing options and pulled up from 35 yards out.

From the moment he struck it, it looked destined for the net. And as it slammed into the top far corner over goalkeeper Bill Gaudette, 40,000 fans in attendance rose to their feet in sheer amazement. It was the first goal of the 2012 season for Montero, who came into the match on a six-game scoreless drought to begin the season.

After going scoreless in six, many forwards would have dished it off instead of trying something so confident, but from Montero’s reaction, it’s as if he had no doubt in his mind, that he could do that. Check out the goal above, and as Kasey Keller says, “Look at the nastiness of that ball!”
