Match Recap

Seattle Sounders FC 2 battle out a gutsy win in Arizona heat behind Darwin Jones, Jordan Schweitzer

Forward Darwin Jones tallied his second and third goals of the season on Saturday night as Seattle Sounders FC 2 came away with the 3-2 victory at Arizona United SC.

Jones opened the scoring in the 25th minute when a picture-perfect through ball from midfielder Zach Mathers sprung him free on right flank. Jones charged into the box and blasted the shot near post past goalkeeper Jordan Stagmiller.

United then came roaring back with two back-to-back goals of their own in the 29th and 35th minutes. The first goal was a powerful and precise long distance rocket from forward Chris Cortez, who caused problems for S2 with two goals in the teams' first match in Seattle on March 30. The second came from midfielder Long Tan, who finished off defender Brock Granger’s clever cross into the area.

Midfielder Jordan Schweitzer then stole the highlight reel with an unbelievable chip goal in the 44th minute right before the halftime whistle to bring S2 back level. Forward Myron Samuel created the chance when he charged into the box but was denied point blank by Stagmiller, sending the ball back out to the edge of area. There, Schweitzer picked it up and with a deft one touch, lobbing it over Stagmiller and his backline to the far post netting.

The final blow came in the 56th minute from Jones, who picked up a through ball from midfielder Emir Alihodzic and again beat Stagmiller on his near post.

S2 are back at home Sunday, July 24 against cascadia rival Portland Timbers 2 (5 p.m. PT, livestream on SoundersFC.com).
