Seattle Sounders center back Roman Torres won't return against Portland Timbers

TUKWILA, Wash. – Despite hopes that Roman Torres might return for the Seattle Sounders’ titanic upcoming matchup against the Portland Timbers, the Panamanian international will wait at least another match to see the field.

Sounders interim head coach Brian Schmetzer confirmed following the team’s training session at Starfire Sports on Saturday that Torres will not be part of the 18-man gameday roster when the Sounders battle Portland on Sunday (6:30 p.m. PT; FS1/KIRO 97.3 FM/El Rey 1360 AM).

Torres earlier this month returned to full training for the first time since suffering a devastating knee injury a year ago, and he’s been a regular fixture during the team’s sessions for the past three weeks. Once he’s fully healthy and able to start it’s expected that he’ll slide next to Chad Marshall to complete the team’s center back pairing, likely pushing captain Brad Evans to the midfield, something Evans said earlier this month he’s prepared for.

The Sounders will play at the Houston Dynamo on Aug. 24 and wrap up the regular season series against the Timbers on Aug. 28 at Providence Park in Portland before a bye week in early September.
