Sounders FC 2 falls to Real Monarchs SLC 3-1 at Starfire Stadium

Sounders FC 2 (2-3-0, 6 points) fell to Real Monarchs SLC (4-1-0, 12 points) on Saturday evening at Starfire Stadium. Forward David Olsen scored his first professional goal to equalize the score early in the second half, but Monarchs SLC netted two second-half goals for the 3-1 result. S2 continues the two-match homestand with a contest against first-place San Antonio FC on Tuesday, April 25 at Starfire Stadium (7:30 p.m. PT / Live-Streamed on SoundersFC.com).

Sounders FC Academy midfielder Sam Rogers appeared to have found the back of the net in the 28th minute, but his drifting header was cleared off the line by Monarchs SLC captain Nick Besler. Minutes later, midfielder Shandon Hopeau's one-on-one chance was stopped by goalkeeper Lalo Fernandez.

Monarchs SLC took the 1-0 lead on a converted penalty-kick attempt in the 35th minute. Monarchs SLC midfielder Jose Hernandez beat his marker, cut in toward goal and played a square ball to Jordan Allen, who was taken down in the area by S2's Rodrigue Ele. Monarchs SLC's Chandler Hoffman netted the spot-kick for the 1-0 lead.

Olsen equalized in the opening moments of the second half for his first professional goal. After S2's free-kick was mis-cleared to the top of the Monarchs' area, Olsen sent a low, bouncing volley through traffic and into the back of the net. The Seattle University product now has one goal in five appearances this season. In the 61st minute, S2 goalkeeper Tyler Miller kept the score at 1-1 with a diving save to his right.

In the 67th minute, Hernandez dribbled through Seattle's backline in front of goal and slotted in his shot to the bottom right corner of the net. Five minutes later, Monarchs SLC extended the lead on a counter-attack when Hoffman received a pass, made a hard turn, then found an open Besler. The captain coolly placed the ball into the back of the net.

In the final play of the match, Miller made a penalty-kick save to keep the score-line 3-1. The third-year pro has made two successful saves from the spot this season. On Tuesday, S2 hosts first-place San Antonio FC at Starfire Stadium, with kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PT.
