What are the goals of S2?

Development and community are the two aspirational pillars of S2.

Development – S2 strives to develop world-class players for the First Team by providing a consistent, competitive and meaningful professional environment in which our most promising Academy players may develop. S2 also functions by providing additional playing time for players returning from injury or staying fit and sharp for the First Team. Seattle Sounders FC believes that winning is learned and as such, players will benefit greatly from competing in USL matches in front of our passionate supporters at Starfire Stadium beginning in 2015.

Community – S2 aims to extend access to our players and teams to our supporters, as well as increase opportunities for fan involvement and influence. Examples of this include commitments to play in the intimate environment of Starfire Stadium, and offer members of the Sounders Community Trust voting rights. Further details on Starfire Stadium and the Sounders Community Trust are below.

What competitions will S2 play in? Who will they play? When is the season?

USL is the primary competition that S2 will compete in. USL is recognized as the Third Division of professional soccer in North America. In 2013, MLS partnered with the United Soccer Leagues (USL) allowing MLS clubs to affiliate with USL teams for the purpose of loaning players. MLS clubs benefit from providing players additional playing time in competitive environments, and beginning in 2015, MLS will mandate that every club either own or affiliate with a USL team.

There are currently 29 USL teams. During the past three years, the partnership between Major League Soccer and the USL has gone from strength to strength, on and off the field. This season, the number of affiliations between MLS and USL clubs as grown to 12 and the number of MLS clubs owning and operating their own USL club has grown from 1 to 8.

The current regular season is scheduled from March to September. The S2 will compete in 30 regular season matches, and have the chance to qualify for the USL Playoffs.
