Clint Dempsey scored in his first game since August of last season but the Seattle Sounders opened their 2017 MLS Cup-defending campaign with a 2-1 road loss to the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium. Dempsey, making his much-anticipated return to the field after missing the second half of last season and all of the 2016 playoffs with an irregular heartbeat, scored Seattle’s lone goal of the evening in the 58th minute off a cross from left back Joevin Jones.
Forward Will Bruin scored a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer, salvaging a 2-2 draw for the Seattle Sounders in their road matchup with the Montreal Impact at Olympic Stadium on Saturday.
Seattle looked to be headed for a second straight defeat to start their 2017 campaign following last week’s 2-1 loss to the Houston Dynamo but Bruin cashed home a desperation cross from midfielder Cristian Roldan in the waning moments of added time allowing the Sounders to escape with the improbable point.
The Seattle Sounders got an 83rd-minute goal from Alvaro Fernandez but gave up an equalizer at the death, settling for a 1-1 draw in their international friendly with Mexican side Club Necaxa at CenturyLink Field on Saturday.
