2012:Set career-highs in games played and starts (29) in 2012, scoring four goals and four assists. Named MLS Player of the Week for Week 33 after scoring two goals vs. DAL (10/21) and playing multiple defensive positions vs. RSL (10/17). Converted penalty kick in in 2-0 win vs. HOU (3/23), improving to 5/5 in career. Assisted on Fredy Montero’s goal at NY (7/15) and Eddie Johnson’s goal vs. VAN (8/18). Recorded a goal and an assist in 6-2 win at CHV (8/25). Scored twice in CCL play, including the game-winners vs. Santos Laguna (3/7) and at Marathon (9/19).
2011: Came back from a knee injury to play in 20 games, starting 17. Tied a career high with five goals and set a career high with five assists. Scored career-high two goals and added an assist in win over TOR (8/30). Named to MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week vs. TOR (8/30). Team-best 3-3 on penatlies. Second on team with four game-winning assists. Scored equalizing goal with penatly vs. VAN (9/24) in game that clinched Cascadia Cup.
2010: Made 11 starts in 12 appearances, scoring one goal and recording a career-high three assists. Missed second half of season due to injury. Last match was vs. D.C. (6/10). Only goal was the eventual game-winner in the 12th minute of 2010 MLS First Kick vs. PHI (3/25)
2009: Started 27 of 29 appearances, including all 210 minutes in both playoff games vs. HOU (10/29, 11/8). Played the full 90 minutes in 26 games. Saw most action in central midfield but was also used on the right. Fourth on team in goals with three, including the game-winner in final home game vs. DAL (10/24), and added two assists. All three goals came at home. Scored second goal in franchise history, vs. NY (3/19). Also scored team’s second goal vs. SJ (4/25).
2008: Played in 26 games, starting 18, for the MLS Cup champions. Started and played the full 90 minutes in all four playoff games for Columbus. Scored the game-winning goal in 2-0 semifinal second leg win over Kansas City (11/8). Scored five goals and added one assist during regular season, finishing fourth on team in scoring. The first goal of his MLS career was the game-winner at San Jose (5/10).
2007: Selected in the second round of the SuperDraft (15th overall) by Columbus. Appeared in four games, starting one. Made first career start at New York (5/19). Made MLS and Crew debut vs. New York (4/7). Started all four reserve division appearances.
International Experience
Earned four caps with senior U.S. National Team. First three caps came during the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Made USA debut in Seattle as a substitute vs. Grenada (7/4) and made first start, at right back, vs. Haiti in Philadelphia (7/12). Last call in was for the February 2010 friendly with El Salvador, playing the full 90 minutes at right fullback. Member of U.S. U-20 National Team, coach by Sigi Schmid, that finished 11th at the 2005 World Youth Championships in Holland.
College
Scored a school-record 31 goals during his four years for UC Irvine. Also graduated as Anteaters’ career leader in game-winning goals (10) and total points (73). Most decorated player in school history, earning Big West Offensive Player of the Year in 2005 and 2006 and All-America as senior. All-Big West his final three seasons.
High School/Club
Scored 54 goals in four seasons at Phoenix’s Mountain Pointe High School. All-state and team captain his junior and senior seasons. Played 10 seasons for Tempe Warriors club. Member of U.S. U-20 National Team, coached by Sigi Schmid, that finished 11th at the 2005 World Youth Championships in Holland.
Married to Becky. The son of Dawn and Tom Grippando. One brother and two sisters. Favorite soccer memory was winning the MLS Cup in 2008.
