SCOTIABANK CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 101

What is the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League?

The SCCL is a tournament that decides the best club team in North America.  We’re not talking national teams like the United States or Mexico, but rather club teams like the Sounders from all over the region. A total of 16 teams compete, including four from the U.S. and four from Mexico. Scotiabank jumped on as a corporate sponsor in December 2014, which is where the SCCL abbreviation comes from.

What’s at stake?

The world. More accurately, the FIFA Club World Cup, which decides the best club team on the planet. The Sounders have a few rounds to go if they want to qualify for that tournament – they’re in the Round of 16 now, which means they’d have to knock off four more opponents to win the SCCL title for the chance to play against the best club team from Europe, South America, etc. For a team with aspirations of enjoying success and exposure on a global scale, reaching the FIFA Club World Cup would be a tremendous step.

Why are the Sounders playing in this tournament?

The Sounders qualified for the 2020 edition of the tournament by winning the MLS Cup in 2019.

Have the Sounders ever played in this tournament before?

Yes. This is the sixth time the Sounders have played in the SCCL. In four of those years, the Rave Green reached the quarterfinals (2011, 2012, 2016, 2018). They lost in the quarterfinals in 2011 to Mexican club Santos Laguna, but then reached the semifinals the next year after beating Mexican club Tigres in the quarterfinals, the first time an MLS team beat a Mexican team in the knockout round. In 2016, the Sounders fell to Club América in the quarterfinals and to Chivas de Guadalajara in 2018.

Which MLS teams will be competing in this tournament?

Four other MLS sides also secured passage into the 2020 CCL by winning the Canadian Championship (Montreal Impact), U.S. Open Cup (Atlanta United), the 2019 Supporters’ Shield (LAFC) and by finishing the atop the Eastern Conference at the end of the regular season (New York City FC).

Who are the Sounders playing?

Placed into Pot 1, the Sounders will face CD Olimpia (HON) in the Round of 16. Seattle will visit the 31-time Honduran champion in Leg One, which will take place between February 18-20, before hosting Leg Two between February 25-27. In the 2015-16 edition of SCCL, Seattle finished one point ahead of CD Olimpia atop Group F, beating the Honduran powerhouse 2-1 at CenturyLink Field and 1-0 on the road.

How does the Round of 16 work?

It’s a two-game, aggregate-goal series (the team with the most goals over the two legs moves on). Away goals count as the tiebreaker in this one, which basically means if there’s a tie in the aggregate goals after the two legs, the team with more goals scored away from home moves on. If they’re all even after two legs, the series is decided by penalty kicks. Tickets for the home leg are included in the 2020 Season Membership package.

Season Members, what do you need to know?

The first match in Concacaf Champions League is included in your 2020 Season Membership ticket package. However, should the team advance, you will automatically have your seats reserved for Concacaf matches through the Pay as We Play program.

Just like in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, you will receive an email from Sounders FC giving you the option to cancel your reservation for the remaining Concacaf matches hosted at CenturyLink Field. If you do not cancel your reservation, your current method of payment listed in SeatGeek Account Manager will be automatically charged once the next home match is confirmed. This program commits you to reserving your seat location for all potential home matches at a Season Member discounted rate.
