Matchday Central: vs. San Jose Earthquakes

Sounders FC vs. San Jose Earthquakes
Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup 5th Round
Tuesday, 7:30 pm PT; Starfire Stadium; Tukwila, Wash.

Record: San Jose is 4-5-4 in MLS this season, putting the Earthquakes eighth in the Western Conference with 16 points.

Head-to-head: Sounders FC beat the Earthquakes in the first of three MLS regular season meetings with a 1-0 victory on May 17 at CenturyLink Field.

All-time Series: This is the second time the Sounders and Earthquakes have met in the U.S. Open Cup. Seattle won the previous meeting 1-0 at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco in 2012, with Cordell Cato scoring the lone goal in the quarterfinal match. With that victory and Seattle’s win during the regular season this year, the all-time series has drawn even at 7-7-1.

How they got there: The Earthquakes topped USL Pro’s Sacramento Republic 2-1 in the fourth round on June 11 at Kezar Stadium.

Player to watch: Steven Lenhart is an active forward who is a nuisance to opposing defenses with his aerial play and work rate. The close confines of Starfire fit his style of play, so Seattle will need to limit the service into the box and keep a close eye on him off the ball.

Notes: Sounders FC is 13-0-0 at Starfire in the U.S. Open Cup, including two qualifying matches in 2009. … Zach Scott’s next U.S. Open Cup appearance will tie him with Roger Levesque for Sounders FC’s all-time lead in Open Cup play. He is currently at 13 appearances, all starts, while Levesque started in nine of his 14 appearances. … Four different players combined for Seattle’s five goals against PSA Elite in the fourth round last week, including Sean Okoli netting his first professional goal. Brad Evans and Zach Scott each scored their second career Open Cup goals for Sounders FC while Kenny Cooper scored two. … The winner will advance to face the winner of Tuesday night’s match between Sporting Kansas City and the Portland Timbers. If Seattle wins, that quarterfinal match will be at Starfire on July 9.
