Sounders Academy U-18s advance to the national quarterfinals

Dick McCormick

While Sounders FC Homegrown product DeAndre Yedlin has taken to the world’s stage at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the Sounders FC Academy was in Indiana taking on some of the top teams in the USSDA system in the national tournament.  After terrorizing their opposition, the U-18s tore through to the quarterfinals with three victories while the U-16s ended their season with an 0-1-2 record in their group.

The U-18s will now host the Montreal Impact in the quarterfinals on July 7 at Starfire Sports Stadium in Tukwila, the winners advancing to the semifinals in Carson, Calif. later in July.

Coming into the tournament, the U-18s had high expectations after going 12-1-2 over 15 games since returning from the winter break.  They did not disappoint in the tournament opener, getting a first-half hat trick from David Olsen on the way to a 9-0 victory over the Atlanta-based Concorde Fire.  They didn’t miss much going into the next match either, posting a 4-0 win over the homestanding Indiana Fire Academy before finally allowing a goal in a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake AZ to go perfect in the group stage.

The U-16s started off with a 3-2 defeat to the Montreal Impact and came back to post consecutive draws against PA Classics 2-2 and 0-0 against Strikers FC.  The U-16s finished the regular season third in the Northwest Division at 13-6-11.
