Midfielder Erik Friberg thanks Seattle Sounders on social media

Veteran midfielder Erik Friberg announced his departure from the Seattle Sounders on Twitter on Tuesday morning after spending a combined three seasons with the club and winning an MLS Cup title.

Friberg, who spent the 2011 season in Seattle and then rejoined the Rave Green in June 2015 after spending several seasons abroad, started 18 games for the Sounders in 2016 and played more than 1500 minutes with two assists registered in the regular season. He also started five games during the Sounders' postseason run to the championship, including a start and a 66-minute shift in the MLS Cup Final on Dec. 10.

Friberg has signed a four-year deal with Swedish club BK Hacken, a team he spent time with prior to originally joining Seattle in 2011. The Sounders opted not to pick up Friberg's option at the end of the 2016 season.

Friberg leaves the Sounders with 64 career regular season appearances and another 10 in the postseason over three seasons. He will perhaps be best remembered for his game-winning goal in the 2015 Western Conference Knockout Round against the LA Galaxy [video above], one of just two goals he scored during this time with the club.
