HILLSBORO, ORE. – Tacoma Defiance (8-3-4, 31 points) defeated Portland Timbers2 (1-11-2, 7 points) 6-1 on Sunday night at Hillsboro Stadium. Goals from Marlon Vargas, Dylan Teves, Ethan Dobbelaere and Joe Hafferty gave Tacoma the lopsided win against its Cascadia opponent.

Vargas continued his stellar form of late with a beautiful free kick goal in the 23rd minute. After Tacoma drew the foul right outside the area, Vargas stepped up to the ball and rocketed a shot into the top corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead. It was Vargas’ club-leading eighth goal of the season, all coming within the last eight games. Teves doubled the lead in the 37th minute when Dobbelaere dropped a pass to the midfielder, who finished off the far post with a one-time shot.

Dobbelaere added to Tacoma’s lead in the 54th minute, receiving a stealthy back heel pass from Teves, putting Homegrown player into space inside the area where he was able to easily finish the chance. It was Dobbelaere again less than a minute later who caught Portland goalkeeper Hunter Sulte way off his line, finishing into the wide-open net from distance.

Timbers2 got one back in the 57th minute, finishing from point-blank range over the outstretched hands of Defiance goalkeeper Andrew Thomas.

Tacoma recorded its fifth of the night as Teves bagged his brace, getting a ball on a low cross from Georgi Minoungou that found the University of Washington product right in front of goal, finishing between the legs of Sulte for the 5-1 lead. Joe Hafferty joined the action in the 79th minute, finishing from inside the area to give Defiance six goals on the night.

Tacoma’s six goals puts them at 41 for the season, and its five-goal margin of victory expands the club’s goal differential to +24, both league-leading marks.

Following tonight’s match, Wade Webber’s returns home to take on Minnesota United FC 2 at Starfire Stadium on Sunday, July 17 (7:00p.m. PT / mlsnextpro.com).
