Andrew Thomas has always found strength through challenges. He embraces discomfort as a way to better himself. He understands that learning from others is a stepping stone to leadership.

And his recently acquired role as Sounders FC’s starting goalkeeper is a testament to this mindset.

Beginning at a young age and growing up in the UK, Thomas was balancing school and his life as a dual-sport athlete with cricket and soccer. Despite the school having a demanding coursework and preferring him not pursue soccer, Thomas' passion for the game was too strong to be ignored.

“He went to a very old school [that’s] been around for about 500 years. [And] because of the traditions of the school, [playing soccer] was discouraged,” said Andrew’s dad, Matthew. “They didn't have a football team at the school. So we had to really push the school to keep them at bay so that enough time could be created for him to continue to get to Watford for training, to get to Middlesex, which [was] his cricket club, to train…and to make time for his school.”

At age 18, Andrew’s ability to juggle school and extracurriculars finally paid off. While he was advanced in both cricket and soccer, the draw of attending college in the U.S. found him choosing a path without the "Gentleman's Game” and instead an eventual scholarship to one of the most prestigious schools in the United States — Stanford University.

“It was pretty obviously a very successful soccer program,” said Thomas. “I knew the academics were what the school was known for more than anything, and so a place that married both was something that I was never going to be able to turn down.”

Moving to a new country can be daunting, but Thomas took advantage of the opportunity. During his time on Stanford’s men’s soccer team, Thomas was selected for the All-Pac-12 First Team on three separate occasions, won a Pac-12 championship, collected 23 shutouts in 55 appearances and was named to the U-23 Men’s National Team.

With Stanford having already built a strong relationship with the Sounders, Andrew’s success earned him training sessions with the MLS side during his second season at the university.

“I had the opportunity to come train with [Club Director of Goalkeeping] Tommy [Dutra], and learned so much, just in that two week period [and] got to train with Stef [Frei], who was already the legend that he is back then,” said Thomas. “And it was just kind of this awe-inspiring experience of getting to be in this First Team environment and see how it operated, and be welcomed into that group as well, while a sophomore in college.”

From that moment on, Thomas knew he wanted to be a Sounder.

“Given how welcoming this place was, I will remember the fondness pretty closely across the rest of my time in college. And so as I started to look forward to playing professionally, it was always going to be like, ‘Okay, how can I make this work with ending up in Seattle.’”

As a result of his efforts, Thomas signed a contract with the Sounders First Team in 2021 after three seasons at Stanford. While it was an exciting milestone, it also marked the beginning of his long journey to the top.

“When I signed, there were four signed First Team goalkeepers. I knew that I was going to be coming in to develop — that was always going to be the expectation,” said Thomas. “Tommy was the best goalkeeping coach in the league, and so this was the place that I was going to be able to develop the most.”

In his first three years with the club, Thomas did not see any action with the First Team, contributing most of his minutes with the club’s MLS NEXT Pro side, Tacoma Defiance. With that, he also suffered a lower back stress fracture in 2023 and was loaned out to USL’s New Mexico United the following season.

Still, his positivity and determination to get better every day overshadowed any doubts of his position at the club.

“When light wasn't always obvious at the end of the tunnel, I knew that I was still developing because of how good Tommy is and because I was learning so much from Stef. And so even when it wasn't obvious that I was going to be getting games, I knew that I wasn't stagnating.”

Thomas eventually earned his first MLS minutes in 2024, making 15 appearances (13 starts) across all competitions. But, it wasn’t until 2025 that Thomas began to truly shine. After being granted the opportunity to serve as the starting keeper in Leagues Cup, the Stanford alum guided the Sounders to their first-ever title in the regional tournament. With four shutouts in six matches — including the team’s 3-0 championship victory over Inter Miami — he was honored with the Best Goalkeeper Award.

“I'd never played in a final, I'd never won a final. And so that was, without a doubt, a special moment in my career, and I'm very grateful,” said Thomas.

He continued: “By the boot room at the [Sounders training facility], they've got the emblems of their trophies. And Stef has won every single one of those. And I, you know, see the Champions League one (2022) and that being the only other one that I've won. And yeah, I was a part of that squad, but I was in the stands, and the success of the whole team is a result of the success of everyone. But I didn't directly contribute by being on the field. And then seeing the Leagues Cup Trophy get added to that collection of trophies, [I thought], ‘Yeah, I can point to a lot of moments or saves that I made that led to us winning that trophy [and] that's a pretty cool feeling.”

Now, five years after signing with the club, Thomas has taken the reins as the Sounders’ No. 1 goalkeeper. It’s a full-circle moment, after having dedicated most of his life to the sport and navigating challenges along the way.

He remained patient throughout his journey, always prioritizing growth and development. He turned setbacks into motivation, and today, plays an integral role in the Sounders’ pursuit of another trophy — in a city that has become home.

“I love the city,” said Thomas. “I've loved the fan base. It's special playing in Seattle.”
