The Seattle Sounders are just one week away from participating in the 2025 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. The chase for MLS glory kicks off Oct. 22, as 18 teams go head-to-head for the ultimate prize.
The Sounders accomplished what every MLS franchise dreams of doing with the completion of the North American trophy cabinet following their Leagues Cup title win on Aug. 31. But, this year’s work is still unfinished as the Rave Green set their sights on winning a second trophy in 2025 on Dec. 6: The MLS Cup.
Looking ahead to Round One:
Finishing in the No. 5 spot in the Western Conference, the Sounders will face No. 4 Minnesota United in the first round of the playoffs. Formatted as a best-of-three series, the Sounders will kickoff Round One at Allianz Field before hosting the Loons at Lumen Field; the date and timing of the matches are to be determined. If the series remains tied, a third match will take place in Minnesota to decide which team advances to the Western Conference Semifinals.
The Sounders have the upper hand over Minnesota in their overall head-to-head record with 16 wins versus Minnesota’s 5, in addition to 4 draws. But, Minnesota has been able to overpower the Rave Green in 2025 competition, coming away with three points on both regular season occasions on June 1 and Aug. 16.
The stage is set for a fierce clash as the Sounders take on a confident Minnesota squad that’s been a force near the top of the Western Conference all season.
Single match elimination:
If the Sounders were to advance out of the Round One, best-of-three-series, the playoffs shift to single-elimination for the Western Conference Semifinals, Conference Final, and ultimately the MLS Cup.

Last year’s results:
The Rave Green made a deep run in 2024 postseason competition, defeating Houston Dynamo in the Round One, best-of-three series, before collecting an unforgettable, comeback win over LAFC in the Western Conference Semifinals. Following a hard-fought draw after 90 minutes, an extra time goal from forward Jordan Morris earned the Sounders a ticket to the Western Conference Final, where they squared off against LA Galaxy.
The Sounders’ 2024 playoff campaign came to an end when an 85th minute goal from Galaxy’s Dejan Joveljic resulted in a 1-0 victory for the Southern California side.
Sounders playoff dominance:
This year’s playoffs mark the Sounders’ 16th appearance, making them the only MLS team to reach the postseason that many times since their inaugural season in 2009. The team’s postseason performances have earned them several accolades, including two MLS Cup titles (2016, ‘19) and four Western Conference Championship wins (2016, ‘17, ‘19’, ‘20). Now, all eyes are on 2025 as the Sounders chase a third MLS Cup and another chapter of glory.
