Clint Dempsey's brace against Portland Timbers sets new mark in Cascadia rivalry

SEATTLE – Clint Dempsey is the ultimate Portland Timbers killer.

With his two-goal performance in the Seattle Sounders’ 3-1 win over the Timbers at CenturyLink Field on Sunday night, Dempsey now has eight career goals against the Timbers, more than any Sounders player has ever scored against another opponent in the team’s MLS franchise history.

Dempsey converted a penalty kick in the 61st minute and then buried a left-footed shot past Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson in the 80th minute to spark the Sounders’ win, their third in as many games. Dempsey has now scored five goals in his past three games, and has eight goals on the season.

Dempsey has scored his eight goals in seven games against the Timbers since he joined the club midway through the 2013 season. Timbers forward Fanendo Adi has six goals against the Sounders, second behind Dempsey in the rivalry's MLS history.

Dempsey came into the game Sunday night tied with Obafemi Martins for the most goals scored by a Sounders player against an MLS opponent. Martins scored six goals in five games against Chivas USA in 2013-14 before the LA-based franchise was contracted following the 2014 season.
