Jordan Morris, Cristian Roldan and United States open 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup campaign with 4-0 win over Guyana

USA celebrates goal vs. Guyana 2019-06-19

The United States men’s national team cruised to a 4-0 win over Guyana on Tuesday at Allianz Field in Saint Paul, Minn., in their opening match of the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup. Seattle Sounders players Jordan Morris and Cristian Roldan began the match on the bench, though Roldan entered the fray as a second-half substitute.

Facing a newcomer to the competition, the United States controlled the match all evening. That translated into an opening goal in the 28th minute when Paul Arriola raced onto a through-ball from Weston McKennie, curling his shot into the side netting.

Tyler Boyd doubled the United States’ advantage in the 51st minute with a powerful drive into the bottom corner. Five minutes later, a half-cleared ball struck Gyasi Zardes on the head, ricocheting into an open net.

Roldan entered in the 63rd minute, coming on for Michael Bradley. The Rave Green stalwart added a bit of composure and steel to the midfield, playing several quality passes into space, releasing the U.S. wingers in transition.

Boyd capped his stellar evening with another well-struck goal in the 81st minute to round out the scoring.

Morris, Roldan and the United States will return to action on Saturday for a match against Joevin Jones and Trinidad and Tobago (5 p.m. PT; FS1).
