Magnus Wolff Eikrem relishes first MLS goal, has “little weight off shoulders”

SEATTLE — Way to open your account, Magnus Wolff Eikrem.

The 27-year-old Norwegian scored his first Major League Soccer goal on Saturday night, the game-winner in the 83rd minute in a 2-1 comeback win over D.C. United at CenturyLink Field. Cristian Roldan whipped in a perfect ball from the right side that Wolff Eikrem headed into the ground and into the corner of the net past the outstretched arms of David Ousted.

“It was a really good cross from Cristian, so it was an easy header,” said Wolff Eikrem. “It’s always a great feeling scoring, and obviously winning was massive for us. We have to keep going.”

Added Head Coach Brian Schmetzer: “It was a very good cross from Cristian, a very good header. When Magnus first came and we were watching him on tape, he’s goal-dangerous. He showed tonight his ability to impact the game. I thought he did well.”

Wolff Eikrem said he’s gone on scoring streaks in the past and is hoping that his inaugural MLS tally can lead to several more soon.

“It’s a little weight off my shoulders,” said Wolff Eikrem. “It’s always good to score. It was a good team performance, people coming back from injury and from national team.

“Hopefully we can build some momentum,” he added. ”It’s a tough game away [coming up against the New York Red Bulls] on Wednesday and then we have a little bit of a break, but if we get a good result there, we can march on.”
