SEATTLE, WASH. – Sounders FC (12-17-5, 41 points) drew 2-2 with the San Jose Earthquakes (8-15-11, 35 points) on Sunday afternoon on the Emerald Queen Casino Pitch at Lumen Field. Nico Lodeiro scored a brace for Seattle, who was eliminated from postseason contention last weekend, as the home side earned a point on Decision Day.
Lodeiro got the home side on the board first, scoring the second-fastest goal in club history, just 25 seconds into the match. After Cristian Roldan passed a ball to his brother Alex at the touchline, the defender played a cross into the area, where Lodeiro took it off the bounce and smashed it into the far side of the net. San Jose quickly answered in the fourth minute. After the Earthquakes’ initial shot was parried away by goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland, the ball took a deflection and fell to the foot of Jeremy Ebobisse, who bagged the strike.
Lodeiro scored his second of the match in stunning fashion in the 49th minute. Midfielder Albert Rusnák swung a corner kick into the area that was deflected out to Lodeiro at the top of the 18-yard-box. The Uruguayan took the ball off the volley and ripped a shot past the outstretched hands of San Jose’s JT Marcinkowski. It was Lodeiro’s seventh regular-season goal of 2022 and 40th in his MLS career. His 57 goals across all competitions are now tied with Clint Dempsey for third most in club history.
San Jose found its second of the match courtesy of Cade Cowell. The forward found himself outside of the 18-yard-box and curled a shot into the top left corner of the net to level the match in the 75th minute.
Brian Schmetzer’s side now heads into the offseason before preparing for the 2023 campaign, which begins with the FIFA Club World Cup.
