MATCH RECAP: Tacoma Defiance falls 4-1 to Portland Timbers 2

Justin Dhillon 5-12-19

TACOMA, WASH. – Tacoma Defiance (2-9-0, 6 points) on Sunday dropped a 4-1 decision to Portland Timbers 2 (5-2-3, 18 points) in Tacoma. The match was the first at Cheney Stadium for Defiance since April 1 following a five-game road swing. Defiance will play three of its next four contests at home.

After being denied on the doorstep by Portland goalkeeper Jake Leeker earlier in the first half, Tacoma forward Justin Dhillon netted his first goal of the season just before halftime. Defiance’s high press forced a turnover, and Dhillon ripped a shot from outside the area to even the match at 1-1.

Foster Langsdorf opened the scoring in the 24th minute after intercepting a back pass in Tacoma’s end. He pounced on a loose ball in the area and found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season to put the visitors ahead, 1-0.

Following Tacoma’s equalizer in the 42nd minute, Portland scored three times in a span of 12 minutes to take a 4-1 lead. Dairon Asprilla converted a penalty kick four minutes after halftime to give the vistors a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish. A goal from Brayan Hurtado in the 59th minute gave Timbers 2 a 3-1 lead, and Asprilla netted his second marker of the match two minutes later to push the game out of reach.

Six players under the age of 20 saw action for Tacoma tonight, as well as four First Team players in Meredith, Jonathan Campbell, Alex Roldan and Henry Wingo.

Tacoma Defiance next hosts Reno 1868 FC on Saturday, May 18 (7:00 p.m. PT / ESPN+). The club then takes on Fresno FC at Cheney Stadium on Sunday, May 26 (1:30 p.m. PT / ESPN+).
