World Cup Qualifying

Nelson Valdez, Joevin Jones, Nicolas Lodeiro and Roman Torres compete in World Cup Qualifying matches

Four Seattle Sounders competed in World Cup qualifiers for their respective nations on Tuesday.

Forward Nelson Valdez started for Paraguay and logged 70 minutes in their 1-0 loss to Bolivia in La Paz in CONMEBOL qualifying. The lone tally came on a Gustavo Gomez own goal in the 78th minute.

Defender Joevin Jones started at left midfield and went 72 minutes in Trinidad and Tobago’s 3-1 loss to Honduras in CONCACAF qualifying. Romell Quioto, Emilio Izaguirre and Eddie Hernandez scored for Honduras, while Carlyle Mitchell recorded the lone tally for T&T.

Midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro entered as a substitute in the 77th minute and picked up a yellow card in Uruguay’s 3-1 road loss to Chile in CONMEBOL qualifying. Edinson Cavani opened the scoring for Uruguay, but Chile responded with a goal from Eduardo Vargas and a brace from Alexis Sanchez. Lodeiro did not play in La Celeste’s 2-1 win over Ecuador last Thursday.

Defender Roman Torres started and went the full 90 minutes for Panama in a scoreless draw with Mexico in Panama City in CONCACAF qualifying.

All four players are expected to return to Seattle by the end of the week and be available for the first leg of the Western Conference Championship against the Colorado Rapids on Tuesday, Nov. 22 (7 p.m. PT; FS1, KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, El Rey 1360AM).
