Obafemi Martins named Seattle Sounders Team MVP for second straight season

Obafemi Martins was named the Seattle Sounders’ Team MVP for the second consecutive year on Friday, joining Osvaldo Alonso as the only players in franchise history to win the award multiple times.

Martins also won the team’s Golden Boot after leading the team with 15 goals in 2015, his third season with the club. The 31-year-old Nigerian international finished third in MLS with 0.71 goals-per-game and first in the league shots-on-goal percentage (66.7), registering a goal or assist in 15 of his 21 regular season appearances.

His scoring percentage (35.7) ranked first in MLS, and Martins became the first player in league history to score 15 goals on fewer than 45 shots. He integral to the club’s late-season resurgence, recording six goals and two assists during Seattle’s eight-match unbeaten run to finish the 2015 regular season.

Martins also won the Sounders’ Team MVP award in 2014, breaking a streak of four consecutive MVP honors for Alonso (2010-13). Goalkeeper Kasey Keller won the award in the club’s inaugural year in MLS in 2009.

Goalkeeper Stefan Frei was named the team's Defender of the Year earlier this week, and midfielder/defender and captain Brad Evans was named the team's Humanitarian of the Year earlier in October.
