Rave Report - Marshall earns spot on Team of the Week

Chad Marshall

After a stellar defensive performance and scoring the game-winning goal on Saturday against the Philadelphia Union, Sounders FC defender Chad Marshall was named to the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week for Week 9.

Marshall blocked six shots on the match to lead a stout Seattle defensive effort against the Union, limiting Philadelphia to just one shot on goal. Then his 84th minute header off a corner kick from Marco Pappa gave Seattle the victory. Marshall now has one goal and two assists in the last three matches.

He was joined on Team of the Week by goalkeeper Luis Robles (New York Red Bulls); defenders Drew Moor (Colorado Rapids), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City) and Jair Benitez (FC Dallas); midfielders Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City), Pedro Morales (Vancouver Whitecaps FC), Lee Nguyen (New England Revolution) and Darlington Nagbe (Portland Timbers); and forwards Joao Plata (Real Salt Lake) and Giles Barnes (Houston Dynamo).

It is the fourth time a Sounders FC defender has been recognized for the weekly honor.

Osvaldo Alonso was also listed on the bench.

Sounders FC's representatives on Team of the Week have been:
Week 1: DeAndre Yedlin.
Week 3: Djimi Traore.
Week 5: Clint Dempsey.
Week 6: Clint Dempsey, Sigi Schmid.
Week 7: Obafemi Martins, Chad Marshall.
Week 8: Clint Dempsey, Sigi Schmid.
Week 9: Chad Marshall.

ON THIS DATE

Forty years ago today, the Seattle Sounders played their first match in the North American Soccer League, falling 2-1 to the LA Aztecs at East LA College Stadium. John Rowlands, who went on to be named to the NASL All-Stars that year, scored the first goal in club history, but it wasn't enough to oust the eventual NASL Soccer Bowl champion Aztecs.

Seattle would host its first match at Memorial Stadium on May 12.

HONDURAS NAMES WORLD CUP ROSTER

Former Sounders FC midfielder Mario Martinez is among the 23-man World Cup roster named by Honduras on Monday, joining a list that includes four current MLS players and four others who played previously in MLS.

Jerry Bengston (New England Revolution), Boniek Garcia (Houston Dynamo), Marvin Chavez (Colorado Rapids) and Victor Bernardez (San Jose Earthquakes) all made the squad that will play three friendlies before the World Cup against Turkey, Israel and England.

Along with Martinez, who played 13 matches for Seattle in 2012 and 2013, former Houston forward Carlo Costly, former Kansas City midfielder Roger Espinoza and ex-D.C. United midfielder Andy Najar also got the call.

Honduras will face Switzerland, Ecuador and France in Group E in Brazil.
