RECAP: Sounders edge past LA Galaxy for second consecutive road victory

JAR_2140

The Seattle Sounders defeated LA Galaxy 2-1 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson (Los Angeles), Calif., on Saturday night courtesy of goals in the first half from Jordan Morris and Léo Chú.

Seattle came flying out of the gates with an opportunity inside the first minute, with Morris finding Chú at the back post but over-hit the ball slightly.

Then in the 20th minute, Chú found space out wide and behind, dribbled toward the endline and crossed the ball into the box for Morris to finish one-time, putting the Rave Green up 1-0. It was a familiar pattern, as it was nearly identical to one of the Chú-Morris combinations from the previous game against Sporting Kansas City.

Chú added another for the Sounders in the 34th minute as the breakout winger dribbled toward the middle, hit a low-driven ball from distance that caught Galaxy goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann leaning the opposite direction, and put his team up 2-0 to close out the half.

But the Galaxy didn't back down as the LA squad came out firing right away in the second half. Galaxy’s quick transition into the attack finally came into fruition in the 62nd minute, when Raheem Edwards hit a rocket at Stefan Frei from just outside the box and defender Jalen Neal pounced on the rebound score LA’s lone goal on the night.

The Sounders had an opportunity to make it 3-1 in the 75th minute with a Raúl Ruidíaz shot in the box, but it was barely blocked.

The Galaxy maintained intense pressure throughout the rest of the match, including a last minute blast from outside the eighteen during stoppage time, but it wasn’t enough as the Sounders took home their second consecutive victory on the road this season.

Seattle will look to maintain their momentum when they host Western Conference leaders St. Louis CITY SC (7:30 p.m. PT; Watch free on Apple TV | TICKETS) at Lumen Field on Saturday.

THREE TAKEAWAYS

Mercer Island Magician

Morris' latest tally sees the Homegrown forward extend his lead atop the Golden Boot race with his eighth goal of the season. The goal also ties him for the most goals at Dignity Sports Health Park by an active player who never played for the Galaxy with six.

Unbeaten streak continues

The Sounders’ win tonight continues the team’s unbeaten streak against LA Galaxy. The club hasn’t taken a loss against LA since 2018, with the road victory marking their tenth matchup since Galaxy has come out with a result.

Schmetzer reaches century mark

Tonight’s win marks Brian Schmetzer’s 100th MLS regular-season win of his career since taking the helm in 2016. He joins just 13 other coaches in MLS league history to achieve such a feat.
