Argentina’s River Plate is taking on Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds at Lumen Field in Seattle on Tuesday, June 17, on Matchday 1 in Group E of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 group stage. Here is everything you need to know about the competition and their upcoming match:

WHEN AND WHERE: Kickoff is at 12 p.m. PT at Lumen Field (TICKETS).

WHERE TO WATCH: The match will be televised for FREE on DAZN.com.

FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP 2025: The FIFA Club World Cup is a global tournament that features 32 of the best clubs from around the world. This year’s edition will take place in North America, with Seattle serving as one of the 11 host cities. The final will be held on July 13 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

CWC FORMAT: The 32 qualified teams from AFC, CAF, Concacaf, CONMEBOL, OFC and UEFA are separated into eight groups of four where the first and second place clubs from each group advance to the knockout rounds.

WHAT’S NEXT: River Plate and Urawa will complete their round robin in Group E with matches against Italy’s Inter Milan and Mexico’s Monterrey, who play each other in the other opening match in Group E.

The Buenos Aires-based club boasts one of the most illustrious academies in world football, having produced, in addition to countless stars of yesteryear, contemporary talents like Julián Álvarez, Hernán Crespo, Radamel Falcao, Enzo Fernandez, Gonzalo Higuaín and Javier Mascherano.

HOW THEY QUALIFIED: River Plate qualified via the CONMEBOL rankings after reaching the knockout stages of the Copa Libertadores in 2024.

CURRENT FORM: River Plate is in second place in Group B of the Torneo Clausura of the Argentina Primera División table with 31 points (8-1-7) from 16 matches.

PLAYERS TO KNOW:

Sebastián Driussi: MLS fans will be familiar with Driussi, who joined River Plate in January after an impressive three-and-a-half-year stint with Austin FC where he totaled 45 goals and was second in the 2022 MLS MVP voting. Driussi has settled in well in his native Argentina, tallying three goals in league play and an additional three goals in just six Copa Libertadores matches.

Miguel Borja: The Colombian international leads his team with five goals in the current campaign and tacked on another goal in Copa Libertadores play. He’s totaled 30 goals in just over 4,000 minutes across his four years with River Plate.

ABOUT URAWA RED DIAMONDS: The Saitama-based Japanese club are five-time winners of the J1 League and are participating in their fourth FIFA Club World Cup. They’ve also won the AFC Champions League three times, with the most recent coming in 2022.

HOW THEY QUALIFIED: Urawa qualified via the aforementioned AFC Champions League title in 2022.

CURRENT FORM: Urawa is third in the J1 League table with 34 points (9-5-7) from 21 matches.

PLAYERS TO KNOW:

Samuel Gustafson: The Swedish international midfielder is in his second season in Japan after joining from BK Häcken. Gustafson has four goals and four assists across 43 matches with the Reds.

Ryoma Watanabe: The Japanese attacker has 12 goals and six assists in two seasons with Urawa. His six goals in 2025 are tied for sixth in the J1 League.
