Seattle shows its love ahead of MLS Cup

Green Space Needle

The squad may be settled in Toronto ahead of Saturday’s MLS Cup, but over 2,500 miles away, the city of Seattle is pumped for perhaps the most hyped contest in MLS history (1 p.m. PT; ESPN, UniMás, KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, El Rey 1360 AM).

Saturday marks Seattle Sounders #DefendOurCup Day in King County, where King County Executive Dow Constantine urges all county residents to “join Brian Schmetzer’s Rave Green Army.”

The King County Administration Building flew a Sounders flag at noon on Friday, while the Seattle City Hall hoisted a Sounders flag on Friday morning. Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan took her pride to the next level, with a friendly wager against Toronto's mayor:

Added Mayor Durkan: "Seattle is rooting for our Sounders as they seek to repeat as MLS Cup Champions and bring our Cup back home. All season long, they have shown the kind of grit, teamwork and passion that make us proud, as we know they will make us proud on Saturday in Toronto. Go Sounders and defend our Cup!"

Pike Place Market hopped in on the civic celebrations as well, as Rachel the Piggy Bank and Billie the Piggy Bank are wearing Sounders scarves Friday and Saturday.

Starbucks flew a Sounders flag atop his headquarters on Friday, while Washington State Ferries are doing the same on the ships traveling into and out of Seattle’s Colman Dock.

Seattle’s iconic Space Needle lit up Rave Green on Friday and will do so again on Saturday, while green will also appear on three other skyline staples: The Columbia Center, The Seattle Great Wheel and CenturyLink Field.

The 520 bridge once again has green sentinels this weekend.

Even the local animals at the Woodland Park Zoo are in on the fun!
