Kickoff at 3:00 p.m. PT on June 1.
ONE-WAY TRAFFIC: It has been all Sounders since this series began in MLS play in 2017 with Seattle boasting a 12-1-2 record and an unblemished 8-0-0 mark at home. The Sounders also knocked out Minnesota United in the 2020 Western Conference Championship.
FERREIRA OPENS HIS ACCOUNT: Forward Jesús Ferreira finally got on the score sheet with the match-winner in a 1-0 win over San Diego FC on Wednesday. “It’s a lot of emotions, a lot of happiness,” he said. “And so for me, it was a matter of time and thankfully it happened now.”
HAWKINS STEPS UP: The unlikeliest of players stepped up midweek in 18-year-old center back Stuart Hawkins, who entered as a 34th-minute substitute for an injured Kim Kee-hee. With Yeimar out and Jackson Ragen still working his way back to full fitness, Hawkins earned just his second MLS appearance and helped see out the clean sheet and win.
UNBEATEN HOME RECORD CONTINUES: The Sounders improved their Lumen Field record to 5-0-2 this season and are one of just two teams in MLS yet to lose at home (FC Cincinnati).
KING OF THE HILL: Beginning with the San Diego match on Wednesday, the Sounders are in the middle of a three-match gauntlet against the best of the Western Conference. San Diego is second in the West, this weekend’s match is against third-place Minnesota and Seattle will travel on June 8 to BC Place for a date at the Western Conference-leading Vancouver Whitecaps.
DEFENSIVELY SOUND: Minnesota has conceded just 14 goals so far this season, which is tied for the second-fewest in the league. The Loons are also second in Expected Goals Allowed, according to American Soccer Analysis, which means they aren’t allowing many good goalscoring opportunities either.
CONTRASTING STYLES: The Sounders love to play with the ball. They’re sixth in the league in possession at 53.2% and fourth in total completed passes. Minnesota, however, want anything but. The Loons are dead last in the league in possession at 38.4% and it’s not particularly close (They’re a full five-plus percentage points behind the second-lowest team in St. Louis CITY SC). That means Minnesota, especially on the road, is going to sit back, absorb pressure and try and take their chances in transition on counterattacks.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Joaquín Pereyra, M
Pereyra has been pulling the strings in midfield for Minnesota with two goals and seven assists on the season, the latter of which is tied for second in MLS. Minnesota acquired the 26-year-old Argentine last offseason as a Designated Player from Atlético Tucumán.
