Second Glance: Rapids

Colorado Second Glance Image

The Sounders FC topped the Rapids 4-3 at CenturyLink Field to extend their unbeaten streak to nine matches.

The Sounders FC topped the Colorado Rapids 4-3 to extend their unbeaten streak to nine matches (6-0-3) and improve to 10-4-8 (38 points) on the season.

Turning Point
Plain and simple, halftime.  The Sounders played well in the first half, but not well enough to keep Colorado from taking a 2-1 lead.  However, the Sounders came out with a renewed focus in the second half and it paid dividends with a goal three minutes into the half and two more just 75 seconds apart late in the half.

Standouts
Fredy Montero
scored a goal and had an assist to give him 3 goals and an assist on the week in MLS play.  Add a goal in the US Open Cup win over the LA Galaxy and it’s been quite a week for Montero.  Head coach Sigi Schmid has praised Montero’s work-rate in recent weeks and Sunday was no exception.
Alvaro Fernandez scored his fifth goal of the season in the first half to keep the Sounders in the match after conceding a goal in the first minute.  His runs up the left side made life very difficult for Kosuke Kimura.

What We Learned
Fans Love Haircuts - With four goals, the Sounders FC fans in attendance all got free hair cuts from Great Clips.  It was the fourth home game this season where the Sounders scored three goals or more.  The offensive explosion in those matches has been nothing short of tremendous.
Fans Also Love Tacos - A home shutout means free tacos from Jack In The Box for the fans in attendance.  They haven’t had that since a 1-0 win over Sporting Kansas City on June 21.  As great as the offense was, the defense was equally undisciplined.  Cleaning that up could make this Sounders team unbeatable.

Next In Line
The Sounders host Manchester United in a friendly on Wednesday night, but don’t have an MLS match until July 30 at Robertson Stadium against the Houston Dynamo.  The team won’t be entirely off, though.  They face San Francisco of Panama in the preliminary round of the CONCACAF Champions League on July 27 in part of a busy month of July that will see them play seven matches in four different competitions.
