Sounders Spotlight: Sounders add depth during MLS SuperDraft

In December, Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey identified two main components to his offseason moves: get younger and get faster. This week, the Rave Green took a fundamental step in that direction during Thursday’s 2016 MLS SuperDraft. Lagerwey swapped the club’s No. 15 selection and general allocation money for Chicago defender Joevin Jones, a 24-year-old burner from Trinidad & Tobago who appeared in 28 matches for the Fire last season. In the second round of the SuperDraft, the Sounders drafted Tony Alfaro, a left-footed centerback from Cal State Dominguez Hills, and Zach Mathers, a versatile midfielder out of Duke.

Here’s the latest headlines surrounding the club:

  • Matt Pentz of The Seattle Times reflected on the successful first year for Cristian Roldan, who the Sounders selected in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.
  • Sounder at Heart scouted the club’s recent addition, Joevin Jones.
  • Soccer America profiled Sounders FC Sporting Director Chris Henderson, who took a unique route to the professional level as a young player.
  • Bleacher Report listed two Seattle matches – No. 1 vs. Portland and No. 4 vs. LA Galaxy – in its must-watch matches of 2016.
  • As mentioned on ESPN FC, Sounders FC Academy product Jordan Morris continues his trial with German side Werder Bremen.

Clint Dempsey and Roman Torres are up for end-of-year CONCACAF awards.
