“Thank you so much for all of the support”: Sounders emphasize gratitude toward fans following FIFA Club World Cup

While the Seattle Sounders’ recent participation in the FIFA Club World Cup represents a historic moment for the club, it also serves as a reminder of the constant dedication and support the fans provide for the club.

From gathering at the Seattle Center Armory for a watch party over the weekend, to making their way all the way to Morocco to attend the Sounders first-ever Club World Cup match in-person, the fans’ commitment to the club is unparalleled.

“We're grateful for them,” said forward Jordan Morris. “We saw a huge contingent of fans here that made the trip all this way just to support us…Just incredible.”

The unrelenting devotion from the fans does not go unnoticed, with the players recognizing their entry into the world-renowned tournament as an accomplishment for not only the club, but for its supporters as well.

“To the fans, I will just say, congratulations,” said goalkeeper Stefan Frei. “Thank you so much for all the support that you've shown us, this is the world stage that we're playing at and it's something to be proud of, I think as Seattleites and as a Sounders fan.”

A late goal in the second half from Al Ahly SC on Saturday cut the Sounders’ time at the tournament short, but the team is looking to hit the ground running come regular season time.

“We're so lucky to have the fans that we do, and we're going to go back and make them proud this season,” added Morris.

What happens on the pitch is a crucial part of the Sounders’ opportunity to participate in tournaments like the Club World Cup, but it is the relationship between the players and the fans that make the club as successful as it is.

“That’s always been there since 1974 and I’m happy that players from this generation understand that connection between the team and the fans,” said Head Coach Brian Schmetzer. “It’s a part of our nature… [The players] do play for themselves and the team, but they also play for the fans that are watching for sure.”
