Vancouver Whitecaps sign former Seattle Sounders forward Fredy Montero to year-long loan

Former Seattle Sounders forward Fredy Montero signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps on Wednesday on a year-long loan from Chinese club Tianjin Teda.

The Sounders’ Cascadia rivals signed Montero by trading $100,000 in General Allocation Money in 2018, $125,000 in Targeted Allocation Money in 2018 and an international roster spot through 2017 to Minnesota United FC in exchange for the top spot in the MLS Allocation Ranking Order.

Montero, 29, spent 2009-12 in Seattle, scoring 47 goals and adding 34 assists in 119 MLS regular-season matches. He recorded double-digit goals in each of his four seasons — he scored 60 total in all competitions — and is still the Sounders’ all-time leader in goals and assists. He was named the 2009 MLS Newcomer of the Year and was a three-time MLS All-Star.

After leaving Seattle in 2012, Montero went on loan to Millonarios in his native Colombia before joining Sporting Club de Portugal on loan as well. Montero eventually joined Sporting CP on a full transfer before joining Tianjin Teda for the 2016 season.
