Sounders draw LA Galaxy 1-1 on Lamar Neagle's late equalizer

Frei 9.10

It wasn't the flashiest 90 minutes of soccer, but the Sounders recorded a point in a 1-1 draw against the LA Galaxy at CenturyLink Field on Sunday evening. With the result, Seattle extends its club-record unbeaten run to 12 matches and now sits just one point behind Portland for first place in the Western Conference, with one match in-hand.

The LA Galaxy struck first on a goal by Gyasi Zardes in the 25th minute. The forward found space in the area and sent a header past a diving Stefan Frei.

The Sounders appeared to have taken the early lead five minutes earlier, but Jordan Morris was ruled offside.

The Rave Green netted the equalizer in the 85th minute on a goal by midfielder Lamar Neagle. Captain Osvaldo Alonso delivered a lob pass to the right flank, where a surging Román Torres delivered a one-time cross to the center of the area. After taking two low bounces, Neagle's shot sailed into the right side of the net for his first goal since returning to the Sounders in July.

Four minutes later, Torres was issued a red card after denying a goal-scoring opportunity. In addition, Morris suffered a hamstring strain in the 61st minute and was subbed off the pitch. Nonetheless, the Sounders were able to extend their unbeaten streak to 12 matches, in addition to a run of five unbeaten meetings with the Galaxy.

Sunday's contest featured Sigi Schmid's first match as visiting manager at CenturyLink Field. He previously served as head coach for Seattle from 2009 through July 2016.
