Where big matches happen: Lumen Field sets stage for monumental year, beginning with Home Opener

group celebration 2.20-1

Lumen Field is where marquee matches happen.

The Sounders secured an MLS Cup at the renowned stadium in 2019. They became the only MLS team to win a Concacaf Champions Cup title in 2022. They collected their first-ever Leagues Cup trophy in a 3-0 win over Leo Messi and Inter Miami in front of 70,000 fans in 2025.

It's a place where the Sounders faced some of the most iconic teams on the planet in FIFA Club World Cup 2025 and one that will host six matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer.

From the electric atmosphere to the intensity on the pitch, moments like these demonstrate how the stadium rises to the occasion when it matters most.

“The energy of the crowd contributes to such a good environment for big moments, big games,” said midfielder Cristian Roldan. “Anytime we have a big game, our fans are ready for it, our fans are loud and our players feed off that.”

This weekend’s home opener vs. the Colorado Rapids is expected to be no different (6:15 p.m. PT; Watch on FS1, Apple TV, SiriusXM FC 157, 93.3 KJR FM, El Rey 1360 AM | TICKETS). Sunday marks the start of a monumental year for the Sounders as the team begins its 2026 MLS campaign and looks to set the tone for the rest of season.

On a broader scope, it's a chance for the club and the fans to come together and establish the standard of a matchday experience at Lumen Field as the city and the stadium gear up for the global stage with the World Cup just months away.

“This year is really special for many reasons. We're growing the game of soccer, and Seattle is a big part of it. Obviously, we have the U.S. [vs. Australia] game here, and many other World Cup games,” said Roldan. “And so it starts with Seattle, showing what we're about, our fans, our city, how much we love the sport. And then we're growing the game in our backyard for the rest of the world.”

The Sounders home opener will be their only match at Lumen Field until April 12 due to stadium updates ahead of the FIFA World Cup. Following Sunday’s fixture, the team will be on the road for six straight matches, making this weekend enduringly significant for the Sounders side.

“It’s almost like a sendoff in a way for the six away games,” said Roldan. “[And so] for us, it’s really important to start off the year in the right way, get the win and also show our fans what this year is going to entail.”
