2015 (Seattle): In his first year in MLS, Tyrone Mears led the club with 33 starts and 2,960 minutes at right-back. Additionally, the Englishman was one of four field players to appear on the pitch for all 300 minutes of postseason action. In his MLS debut against the New England Revolution, Mears recorded an assist in the 3-0 victory (March 8). He was named to the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week in Week 1 and Week 8. Mears’ 33 league appearances set a new club record by a field player in a single season. He scored his first career MLS goal with well-placed distance strike in the 88th minute of a 1-0 victory against D.C. United (July 3). Mears recorded an assist on Chad Barrett’s game-winning tally in second half stoppage-time against the New York Red Bulls (May 31). He added an assist in a 4-1 loss against the Portland Timbers (June 28).
2013-2014 (Bolton Wanderers): In his final season with Bolton, Mears record one Football League Championship appearance, in addition to two League Cup starts against Tranmere Rovers and Shrewsbury Town.
2012-2013 (Bolton Wanderers): Mears made 26 league appearances in the Football League Championship and recorded six yellow cards, while also appearing in two FA Cup matches, in which Bolton advanced to the fourth round before losing to Everton 2-1. On the season, Bolton finished seventh in the Championship, missing the playoffs by one spot.
2011-2012 (Bolton Wanderers): Mears signed a three-year deal with Bolton on July 29, 2011. One week later, on August 4, Mears broke his leg during a training session. Mears was able to return to action for one appearance in a 1-0 victory in a reserve match against Sunderland on January 24, 2012. He was available as an unused substitute in Bolton’s 2-1 FA Cup win versus Swansea City on January 28.
2010-2011 (Burnley): On the season, Mears made a career-high 49 total appearances for Burnley, compiling 44 league appearances for the Clarets. Mears tallied a goal on a curling free kick in the 82nd minute of a 2-1 victory against Derby County on November 28, 2010. In addition, he made three appearances in the FA Cup, including a goal against Port Vale on January 8, 2011. Mears also appeared twice in the League Cup. The club finished eighth in the Championship table, falling two spots short of playoff qualification. Mears accumulated 10 yellow cards and one ejection, which occurred in a 1-0 loss to Swansea on August 28, 2010.
2009-2010 (Burnley): Mears joined Barclays Premier League side Burnley on June 30, 2009. In his first of two seasons at Turf Moor, Mears, who tallied seven yellow cards on the season, appeared in each of the club’s 38 matches and made another appearance in the FA Cup. The side finished 18th in the Premiership, accumulating 30 points. Burnley was relegated to the Football League Championship the following season.
2008-2009 (Derby County / Marseille): Mears began the campaign with five total appearances for Derby County in the Championship and League Cup, in which the club went 2-2-1. On August 29, 2008, Mears went on a trial at Marseille, leading to an eventual loan agreement. In his lone season with Olympique de Marseille, Mears made seven total appearances, including four in France’s Ligue 1. He scored the extra time game-winner in the second leg of a UEFA Cup match against Ajax on March 18, 2009, putting Marseille through the quarterfinal round of the tournament. Mears returned to Derby County at the conclusion of the campaign.
2007-2008 (Derby County): Despite a staunch relegation fight in the Barclays Premier League, it was a mostly successful season for Mears, who appeared in 25 BPL matches and made an additional appearance in the FA Cup. A stress fracture in January sidelined Mears for nearly three months. In his fourth appearance returning from injury, he scored Derby’s only goal in a 2-1 defeat to West Ham on April 19, 2008. He tallied two yellow cards, both of which occurred before the injury. Derby was relegated from the Premiership at season’s end.
2006-2007 (West Ham United / Derby County): Mears signed with West Ham on July 4, 2006. After six total appearances with the club from East London, Mears joined Derby County on loan for the rest of the season, where scored one goal and earned three yellow cards. He made his debut with Derby in the 84th minute of a 1-0 win at Southampton on February 3, 2007, and recorded a total of 17 appearances. He scored his first goal with Derby in a 2-0 victory over Leeds United on May 6, 2007. The club was promoted to the Barclays Premier League after beating West Bromwich Albion in the Championship Playoff Final.
2005-2006 (Preston North End): In his final season with Preston North End, Mears made 39 total appearances as PNE reached the Championships Playoffs semifinal round. In 32 Football League Championship matches, Mears found the net twice, in addition to recording seven yellow cards. His first goal came in a 2-2 draw versus Cardiff City on October 18, 2005. Mears also scored in a 5-1 drubbing of Luton Town on February 11, 2006. The club finished fourth in the table on 80 points.
2004-2005 (Preston North End): Mears returned from injury after a 10-month hiatus and appeared in four matches in the Football League Championship and an additional FA Cup match. He received a yellow card in the final match of the season on May 8, 2005, which resulted in a 3-1 loss to Derby County. The club finished fifth in the table and lost in the Championship Playoff Final to West Ham United, 1-0, on May 30, 2005.
2003-2004 (Preston North End): Mears appeared in 14 total matches across all competitions, including 12 Football League Championship contests, and an appearance in both the League Cup and FA Cup. Mears scored in a 3-3 draw against Sunderland on March 10, 2004. He received a yellow card in a 2-1 win against West Ham on January 10, 2014.
2002-2003 (Preston North End): Mears joined Preston North End on July 3, 2002 on a three-year deal. He made his debut in the 70th minute of a 3-3 draw against Walsall on October 19, 2002. Mears went on to appear in 24 total matches during the campaign. The defender scored his first professional goal in the 83rd minute of a 5-1 defeat to Reading on April 15, 2003. Mears also made his first appearance in the FA Cup and recorded two appearances in League Cup action. He received his first professional caution during a 1-0 loss to Sheffield United on December 21, 2002, and earned another a few weeks later, on January 1, 2003, against Stoke City, which resulted in a 2-1 loss.
2001-2002 (Manchester City): Mears is a product of Manchester City’s youth system, and he signed trainee forms with the club in 2001. He made his professional debut for City against Nottingham Forest as an 84th-minute substitute on March 30, 2002. City earned promotion to the English topflight at the end of the season, and Mears was transferred to Preston North End.
