Former Seattle Sounders FC defender DeAndre Yedlin made his debut with English Premier League side Sunderland on Tuesday, and came away with an assist in the team’s 4-1 Capital One Cup loss to Manchester City.

Yedlin, 22, earned the start and logged a full 90 minutes at right back for the Black Cats, who gave up four goals before the half and never recovered in the loss.

The team’s lone bright spot came in the 83rd minute, when Yedlin drifted a cross from the right side to the head of Ola Toivonen, who buried the header for the team’s lone goal of the match. It was Yedlin’s first point in any first-team match since he left MLS for England earlier this year.

Yedlin nearly picked up an assist in the 25th minute, when he skirted Manchester City's Aleksandar Kolarov near midfield and lofted a cross to Toivonen in the box, but Toivonen's header was tipped over the bar by Manchester City goalkeeper Wilfredo Caballero.

Sunderland picked up Yedlin on a year-long loan from Tottenham on Sept. 1 after Yedlin appeared in one Premier League match with Spurs. He joined Tottenham on a four-year deal in January after two seasons with the Sounders.

Yedlin is expected to make head coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s roster for the U.S. National Team’s upcoming CONCACAF Cup match against regional rivals Mexico on October 10 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. Yedlin has appeared in 15 games for the U.S. team this year.
