Sounders FC defender Chad Marshall sustains injury during training session

Sounders FC defender Chad Marshall sustains injury during training session -

Update: Chad Marshall took to Twitter on Wednesday evening to thank fans for their concern and support following his injury at training earlier in the day.

Seattle Sounders FC defender Chad Marshall sustained an unspecified injury during the team’s training session in Tukwila on Wednesday, leaving the All-Star centerback’s playing status unclear for this weekend’s match against the LA Galaxy and potentially beyond.

Marshall went down late in the team’s training session following a collision with another player and remained on the ground before he was immediately attended to by Sounders training staff. He was eventually carried off the field on a stretcher and placed in an ambulance and taken to a nearby hospital.

Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid said that Marshall “fell and hit his head” during the training session, but insisted it was too early to diagnose the specificity or severity of the injury until Marshall received additional examination.

“We’re obviously taking all the precautions, but at this stage we don’t know,” Schmid said. “We’ll know more later.”

Marshall, 31, has appeared in 27 games this year, his second season with the Sounders since coming over from Columbus Crew SC last year. He was named the MLS Defender of the Year last season, the third such honor of his 12-year MLS career.

Schmid said the club took the necessary precautions in stabilizing Marshall’s head and neck after the incident.

“You’re always going to be a little more conservative,” Schmid said. “So we just dealt with it in a very conservative manner, and we’ll know more later.”

A number of Sounders players gathered around Marshall following the injury before they continued working out on an adjacent portion of the field.

“They just wanted to come over,” Schmid said. “Nobody wants to see anybody hurt.”

The Sounders return to action against the Galaxy at CenturyLink Field on Sunday (6:30 p.m. PT / FOX Sports 1).
