United States U-17 national team invites Seattle Sounders Academy GK Sam Fowler for special training

Seattle Sounders Academy goalkeeper Sam Fowler has received a special invitation to train with the United States U-17 national team from Feb. 1-9 at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

Head coach John Hackworth recently named his 32-man roster for the upcoming spring semester of the U.S. U-17 Residency Program. Although Fowler was not on the initial list, his performances this season with the Sounders warranted a closer look from the U.S. Soccer staff. This is his first call-up to a United States youth national team.

A product of the Sounders Discovery Program, the starting goalkeeper for the Sounders’ U-16 side has spent the last four years in the Rave Green youth system. Always a solid shot-stopper, Fowler has developed into a dominant force on crosses, and his distribution is a vital component of the squad’s expansive, possession-oriented brand of soccer. He even managed to record an assist on the first goal in the Sounders’ 3-2 victory over the rival Portland Timbers back in October.

“Sam has earned this opportunity,” said Academy Technical Director Marc Nicholls. “He has worked extremely hard and has made rapid progress in some key areas of his game."

With MLS Cup MVP Stefan Frei recovering from a sprained right ankle, Fowler had the opportunity to train with the first team as they began preseason. The Academy prospect impressed goalkeeper coach Tom Dutra with his handling and ability to read the game.
